Changes at Geosynthetics International – an official journal of the IGS

This news item is to alert IGS members of exciting changes for the journal Geosynthetics International, which is an official journal of the IGS and available for free to all members as part of their IGS membership. Access to the journal can be made by following the instructions on the IGS website at

Effective the beginning of May 2021, the editorial structure of the journal has changed with the addition of Dr. Ennio M. Palmeira and Dr. Patrick J. Fox as Editors of the journal and myself as Editor-in-Chief.  I am delighted that Ennio and Patrick have agreed to take on the Editor role which will greatly assist the journal to organize and adjudicate the increasing number of paper submissions. Both bring to our team experience as editors of other journals, reviewers and authors of quality contributions to our journal and other journals serving the geosynthetics, geotechnical, and geoenvironmental engineering communities.

I will continue an active role in the management of the journal, but Ennio and Patrick will manage paper reviews including the assignment of reviewers and final decisions on each submission.

Dr. J.P. Giroud, who has been the Chairman of the Editorial Board since the inception of the journal in 1994, has retired from journal activities after many years of service. His contributions to the organization of the journal, his great wisdom, and technical paper contributions including many seminal works, cannot be overstated. I will miss his help and support immensely.

The second major change is that submission of papers to the journal will now be done through ReView a web-based platform at “”. The new Editors and I believe that you will find this platform to be intuitive and exceptionally user-friendly.  Of course this new platform will also assist to expedite the review of submissions to the journal and the publication of accepted manuscripts.

The migration to ReView would not have been possible without support of the IGS. For this we thank the IGS President, Professor C. Yoo and the IGS Executive and Council.

Finally, in the last months, we have expanded the Editorial Board to include Professor R. Jamshidi Chenari (University of Guilan, Iran),  Dr. F.B. Ferreira (University of Porto, Portugal) and Professor S.K. Bhatia (Syracuse University, USA). We believe that they will add further strength to our team. The Editors and I will be reviewing the current Editorial Board and seeking new members in the next few months.

The Editors and I encourage all IGS members to keep abreast of journal articles and to consider submission of quality papers on novel and important developments in the application of geosynthetics through case studies and research.
